How To Measure Without A Ruler
2016-2017
How To Measure Without a Ruler weighs the personal archive against the scientific. Gleaning its imagery from my father’s collection of slides and prints, the series blurs the lines between the photographs used to to document the changing climate and snapshots of my father’s life and my family’s history. Presenting the personal archive alongside the naturally occurring archives of the tree cores present throughout the works, the show draws an analogous link between their formation, and that of the slow and gradual accumulation of a photographic archive. Bringing to mind ideas of conservation both archivally and environmentally it forces the viewer to question both their relationship to the landscape and their relationship to photography and the archive. With recent pushback against access to scientific research How to Measure Without a Ruler provides a human element to the debate and allows the viewer to see that nothing happens in isolation.
The exhibition was displayed at Pushmi Pullyu in Toronto in late 2017.
